Flood Havoc Claims 910 Lives, Over 1,000 Injured Since June: NDMA

Sep 8, 2025 | Current Affairs

The scale of destruction from this year’s torrential rains and flash floods continues to mount. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), at least 910 people have lost their lives and 1,044 others have been injured in flood-related incidents across Pakistan since June 26.

The human toll is heartbreaking: among the dead are 241 children, 520 men, and 149 women. Punjab has reported 234 fatalities, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has suffered the heaviest blow, with 504 deaths. Other regions also counted their losses — Sindh (58 deaths), Balochistan (26), Gilgit-Baltistan (41), Azad Jammu & Kashmir (38), and Islamabad (9).

The tragedy is not limited to human lives. 7,850 homes have been damaged, nearly 6,200 livestock perished, and thousands of families remain displaced.

Widespread Injuries and Destruction

Flood incidents have left 315 children, 444 men, and 285 women injured, with Punjab again the worst hit at 654 cases. KP recorded 218 injuries, while Sindh saw 78. Smaller but painful numbers came from Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, and Islamabad.

The NDMA confirmed that at least 1,945 homes were completely destroyed, while 5,905 were partially damaged, leaving families to pick up the pieces of shattered lives and livelihoods.

Large-Scale Rescue and Relief

Despite the devastation, massive relief efforts have been underway. More than 2.4 million people have been rescued in 4,594 coordinated operations across flood-hit areas. Punjab alone accounted for over 2.26 million evacuations, followed by 14,317 in KP, 127,447 in Sindh, and smaller but critical rescues in Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Balochistan, and Islamabad.

The NDMA, working closely with the Pakistan Army and humanitarian partners, has distributed 173,569 relief items, including tents, blankets, ration bags, food packs, hygiene kits, and safe drinking water. Equipment such as de-watering pumps, generators, and solar panels has also been sent to affected areas to aid recovery.

Relief and Medical Camps

Nationwide, 2,326 relief and medical camps have been established to assist those uprooted by the disaster. Of these, 694 medical camps have provided treatment to nearly 200,000 patients, while 1,632 relief camps are sheltering more than 85,000 people.

A Test of National Resilience

The floods have once again highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate extremes and the heavy burden carried by ordinary citizens in rural and urban areas alike. With livestock losses, destroyed homes, and continued displacement, the recovery will be long and painful.

Yet, the coordinated rescue missions and rapid response by the NDMA and armed forces show a determination to protect lives and rebuild communities. For now, however, families across Pakistan mourn their loved ones, even as they cling to hope amid the rising waters.
