Teen Son of IHC Judge Sent on Physical Remand Over Fatal Car Accident

ISLAMABAD — The teenage son of IHC judge Mohammed Asif was placed under police custody on Tuesday after a tragic road accident claimed the lives of two young women in the capital. Judicial Magistrate Shaista Khan Kundi approved the remand order following the police’s request for further investigation.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Secretariat Police Station, the incident occurred late Monday night near the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA) when a black sports utility vehicle (SUV), allegedly driven by the judge’s son, struck two women riding a scooter. The victims reportedly died on the spot. Eyewitnesses and initial reports suggested that the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The FIR, lodged on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Muhammad Asghar, stated that police traced the SUV through its registration number and later located the suspect at a private hospital where he was receiving medical attention. He was subsequently taken into custody, and both the vehicle and medical and forensic evidence were secured for examination.

Sections 279 (rash driving), 322 (manslaughter), and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Pakistan Penal Code have been invoked. The investigating officer told the court that custody was necessary to verify the suspect’s medical report, examine the vehicle, and record eyewitness statements. Following the review, the court approved the suspect’s physical remand.

The bodies of the victims were transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for autopsy. Authorities are also working to obtain CCTV footage to determine whether speeding or negligence contributed to the accident. Police have assured the victims’ families that the case will be investigated thoroughly and impartially.

The case has drawn attention due to its similarities to a 2022 incident in Islamabad, where an SUV allegedly driven by the daughter of a Lahore High Court judge ran over two people near the Sohan Bridge on the Expressway. That investigation reportedly stalled, and in February this year, a local court acquitted the accused, Shanzay Malik, daughter of Supreme Court Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed, after a legal petition was accepted by Judicial Magistrate Adnan Yousuf.

The current case is under close scrutiny, with authorities emphasizing the need for transparency and due process, particularly in light of past incidents involving the children of judicial figures.
