ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday removed objections to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s petition seeking permission to meet Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, issuing notices to the Adiala Jail superintendent and others for October 23.

Highlights

  • IHC overruled registrar’s objections on Afridi’s plea.
  • Notices sent to interior secretary, Punjab Home Department, IG Prisons, and Adiala Jail superintendent.
  • Afridi says cabinet formation depends on consultation with Imran Khan.

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir took up the case and dismissed the registrar office’s objections that questioned the maintainability of the plea. Afridi’s counsel, Advocate Ali Bukhari, argued that the objection claiming the petition lacked cabinet approval was baseless since the cabinet had not yet been formed.

The court consequently issued notices to the Interior Secretary, Punjab Home Department Secretary, Punjab Inspector General of Prisons, and Adiala Jail Superintendent, summoning responses by October 23.

Afridi, who was sworn in as KP Chief Minister on October 15, filed the petition two days after obtaining protective bail from the Peshawar High Court. He had attempted to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on October 16 but was denied access.

The petition asserted that the KP government had already submitted formal requests to the federal interior ministry and Punjab home department for the meeting but received no approval. Afridi maintained that consultation with Imran Khan was “legally and ethically necessary” for key administrative and political decisions, including cabinet formation.

The IHC registrar’s office earlier noted that the court had ruled on similar petitions before, outlining a procedure for seeking meetings with the PTI founder, and questioned Afridi’s move to file a new plea without following that process.
