KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has approved a comprehensive Rs4.2 billion plan to rehabilitate and beautify four major traffic corridors in the city, aiming to improve infrastructure, traffic flow and the overall urban environment.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab at the KMC head office. Under the plan, four key corridors — Rashid Minhas Road, S.M. Taufique Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road and Pehalwan Goth Road — will undergo extensive upgrading and rehabilitation.

According to officials, the KMC has allocated Rs1.9 billion for Pehalwan Goth Road, Rs1.12bn for Rashid Minhas Road, Rs574 million for Sir Shah Suleman Road and Rs429m for S.M. Taufique Road. Rashid Minhas Road will be rehabilitated from Sharea Faisal to Shahrah-i-Usman via 4-K Chowrangi and Nagan Chowrangi, while S.M. Taufique Road will be upgraded from Liaquatabad Flyover to Teen Hatti Bridge. Sir Shah Suleman Road will be improved from Karsaz to Nazimabad’s Habib Bank Chowrangi, and Pehalwan Goth Road from Habib University in Gulistan-i-Jauhar to the Race Course in Safoora.

A KMC spokesperson said the initiative focuses on sustainable infrastructure development, improved traffic management and the creation of greener urban spaces. The rehabilitation work will include resolving longstanding sewerage issues, developing green belts, improving lane markings and introducing traffic-friendly designs to enhance connectivity with the city’s main arteries.

Mayor Wahab directed officials to float tenders without delay to ensure swift execution of the projects. Briefing the meeting, KMC Financial Adviser Gulzar Abro confirmed the finalisation of development schemes and the allocation of funds aimed at restoring Karachi’s key roads and improving their functional and visual appeal.

Addressing the meeting, the mayor stressed the need for fast-track implementation. “Karachi deserves better. I want emergency-level execution of these projects,” he said, adding that the provincial government and the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were committed to supporting KMC’s efforts for the city’s revival.

Separately, Mr Wahab inaugurated Raheem Bux Soomro Road and other development projects worth Rs104m in Gulzar-i-Hijri, Scheme 33, Safora Town. Referring to major transport projects, Mr Wahab said work on the University Road Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line had resumed after financial issues were resolved, with a target completion date of July 31. He also announced that the Karimabad Underpass would be opened to traffic in the first week of February.
