KP disaster management authority issues heatwave alert for plain areas

May 7, 2026 | Current Affairs

PESHAWAR, May 7 — The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an urgent directive to all deputy commissioners to implement safety measures ahead of a heatwave expected to hit the province on Friday. Plain areas, including Peshawar and southern districts, are forecasted to experience a sharp rise in mercury, with temperatures potentially reaching up to 47°C in some regions. The PDMA warned that the extreme heat will persist from May 8 to May 10, posing risks to human health, livestock, and agriculture. Authorities have been told to establish dedicated heatstroke centers and ensure an uninterrupted supply of water in high-traffic zones.

Quick Facts

  • Extreme heatwave conditions are forecasted for KP from May 8 to May 10.
  • Temperatures in southern districts (D.I. Khan, Bannu, Tank) may peak at 43–47°C.
  • Peshawar, Mardan, and Nowshera are expected to see highs between 39–43°C.
  • A shallow westerly wave is expected to bring relief starting late May 10.
  • Health departments are mobilizing to set up cooling points and mobile stations.
  • The alert follows a deadly heatwave in Karachi that claimed 10 lives on Monday.

The PDMA letter emphasizes the need for widespread public awareness campaigns, advising citizens—particularly children and the elderly—to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours. Emergency services have also been placed on high alert for potential wildfires, which often coincide with sudden temperature spikes and dry conditions. Farmers are being encouraged to adjust irrigation schedules to protect crops and ensure adequate cooling for livestock.

This regional warning comes on the heels of a national emergency protocol issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as extreme summer temperatures threaten millions across Pakistan. With Karachi already recording its highest temperature since 2018 earlier this week, the KP administration is taking proactive steps to minimize heat-related casualties. Residents are urged to use water judiciously and stay informed about the signs of heatstroke as the province braces for the three-day peak.
