BANNU: Former nazim of Domel tehsil in Bannu district, Fida Muhammad Khan Wazir, was injured on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated outside his office in the Domel Bazaar area, police said.

Bannu police spokesperson Asif Hassan confirmed that the blast was caused by a pre-installed IED planted at the main gate of the office. He said police and security personnel rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported, cordoned off the area and launched a formal investigation to determine those responsible.

According to police and local sources, the explosion occurred outside the gate of the former nazim’s office at a time when Wazir was present nearby in his vehicle. He sustained minor injuries in the blast and was provided medical assistance. His vehicle was completely destroyed, while the office gate and parts of the surrounding area were damaged as a result of the explosion.

Sources said that an important meeting of tribal elders was scheduled to take place at the office later the same day. Wazir was reportedly on his way to attend the gathering when the blast occurred. The incident led to panic in the area, with shopkeepers closing their businesses and residents expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation.

Following the attack, tribal elders and local residents gathered at the scene and announced plans for a protest, demanding improved security and swift action against those involved. Armed individuals were also seen along the Bannu–Kohat Road, prompting authorities to increase vigilance. The police spokesperson said the situation was being closely monitored to prevent any further unrest.

Wazir is known locally for his role in peace initiatives and for taking part in efforts to counter militancy in the region. In the past, he has been involved in organising tribal lashkars aimed at maintaining peace and resisting terrorist activity in parts of Bannu and surrounding areas.

The blast comes amid a series of security incidents in the district. A day earlier, a man and his son from the Hathikhel tribe were allegedly abducted by suspected militants near Jhandokhel in Domel while travelling with their family. On Sunday, a police constable was shot dead in Bannu’s Kashfi Khel area, while three traffic police personnel were killed in a separate attack in Lakki Marwat district’s Serai Naurang area.

Earlier incidents have also targeted government officials in the region. On December 2, the then assistant commissioner of Miranshah, Shah Wali, and two police officers were among those killed when their vehicle was attacked in Bannu.

Despite reported militant losses, Pakistan experienced a marked rise in militant violence in 2025. Official data shows terrorist attacks increased by 34 per cent during the year, with fatalities rising by 21 per cent. A total of 699 terrorist incidents were recorded nationwide, underscoring ongoing security challenges in several regions, including southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
