TOBA TEK SINGH/NAROWAL: Dense fog continued to wreak havoc across Punjab on Monday, claiming at least five lives, including a schoolchild, and leaving eight other children injured in two separate road accidents caused by dangerously low visibility.
The first and more tragic incident occurred on Buchekey Road in Nankana Sahib, where a school van collided head-on with a passenger bus amid thick fog. According to rescue officials, the crash happened during school hours when visibility was severely reduced, leaving drivers with little reaction time.
The collision proved fatal for the van driver, Asghar (35), and a 15-year-old school student, Turab Ali, who died on the spot. Eight other schoolchildren sustained injuries, some of them critical. Rescue teams rushed the injured to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, Nankana Sahib, where an emergency was declared to deal with the influx of casualties.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tasleem Akhtar Rao visited the hospital and inquired after the injured children. He directed the medical superintendent to ensure that the victims received the best possible medical care. Hospital officials later confirmed that three critically injured students — Ghulam Fareed (14), Amer (18), and Adeel (19) — were referred to a Lahore hospital for advanced treatment.

In a separate fog-related accident in Sialkot, three men lost their lives when a trailer loaded with iron rods overturned on the Pasrur-Daska Road near Musapur stop. According to a spokesperson for Rescue 1122, the accident occurred when the driver failed to control the vehicle due to extremely poor visibility caused by heavy fog.
As the trailer overturned, three men riding on it fell off and became trapped underneath the vehicle. Rescue teams, assisted by local residents and heavy machinery, managed to pull out the victims, identified as Ali Raza (25), Arshad (40), and Afzal (45). Despite being provided first aid at the scene, all three men succumbed to their injuries before they could be shifted to hospital.

Local police reached both accident sites, completed legal formalities, and transferred the bodies to government hospitals for post-incident procedures.
The series of accidents has once again highlighted the dangers of travelling during dense fog, particularly on highways and rural roads where visibility can drop to near zero. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel during foggy conditions, use fog lights, maintain safe speeds, and follow traffic advisories to prevent further loss of life.
