For years, young readers in Pakistan and across the South Asian diaspora have devoured stories of wizards in Scotland and demigods in America. Now, a new chapter in global fantasy has been written, one rooted firmly in the mountainous heart of the subcontinent.
Pakistani author Saniya Chughtai officially unveiled her pre-teen fantasy novel, Marni Khan and the Ancient Silk Route, at the recent Sharjah International Book Fair, sparking excitement over a series that blends local folklore with world-class adventure.

The Search for the “Pakistani Harry Potter”
Chughtai’s novel, the first in the series ‘The Rise of the Energy Warriors,’ is a deliberate attempt to answer a long-standing cultural need: to give Pakistani children a fantasy hero whose world is instantly recognizable, yet utterly magical.
“I wanted to give Pakistan its own fantasy legend, something as powerful and imaginative as the worlds of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, but deeply rooted in our own heritage.”
Chughtai stated at the launch.
The story follows 12-year-old Marni Khan on a treacherous quest to unlock the secrets of a mysterious silk cloth left by her deceased mother. Her journey is an odyssey across the breathtaking, ancient landscapes of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Silk Route, where the fantastical is woven into the very terrain.
Instead of Greek gods or European trolls, Marni must navigate a realm populated by creatures from Pakistani mythology: malevolent spirits known as Deos and Jinns, and powerful local fairies (paris). The narrative skillfully embeds cultural touchpoints, the local languages, the stunning geography, and the unique legends, making the book a subtle celebration of national identity.

A Positive Image on the Global Stage
The book’s launch was more than just a literary event; it was attended by Pakistan’s Consul General in Dubai, Hussain Muhammad, who praised the novel for its cultural depth.
In an era where Pakistan often seeks positive global representation, this novel achieves it through the universal appeal of imaginative fiction. It serves as an accessible introduction to the country’s diverse wonders and resilience, inspiring both local youth and international readers to discover the magic hidden within the nation’s history and landscape.
As Marni Khan embarks on her journey of self-discovery, finding her own power in the face of ancient evil, she becomes a crucial new figure in global children’s literature, proving that the next great fantasy saga can indeed begin on the Silk Route.
